By attacking ships in the Red Sea starting in November 2023, the Houthis, a militant group that captured Yemen’s capital a decade ago, have caused the biggest disruption to global trade since the Covid-19 pandemic, subduing activity in one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.

Vessel operators, for the most part, have rerouted their traffic around the southern tip of Africa instead of going through the Suez Canal — a lengthier and more expensive journey for ships traveling between Asia and Europe.
